Nurse Practitioner Duties
- Monitors progress of and intervenes in the course of chronic illnesses, using ODRC
- policies and protocols for guidance
- Inoculates or vaccinates against communicable diseases & prescribes medications or
- administers treatment of acute and chronically ill patients & performs minor surgery as
- training & competency allows
- Performs routine physical exams of patients to determine control or status of chronic
- conditions & diagnoses new conditions
- Evaluates patients for the necessity of specialty referral consultations inside or outside
- the institution & reviews said consult reports for the recommendations, approving or
- disapproving accordingly
- Orders & reviews the results of laboratory, x-ray, & other diagnostic testing as
- appropriate
- With the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), facilitates the completion of medical
- reclassification & requests for non-formulary medications as necessary
- Performs routine & emergency medical care of patients as scheduled
- Examines, diagnoses & treats patients within scope of practice, as identified by the State
- of Ohio Nursing Board, as applicable
- Conducts rounds on infirmary patients as deemed appropriate by the CMO
- Writes up medical information gathered during patient interviews according to ODRC
- Office of Correctional Healthcare guidelines, policies, protocols & related American
- Correctional Association standards currently in practice, documenting all assessments &
- diagnostic impressions, as well as any other treatment plans & follow-up parameters
- Cooperates with CMO medical quality oversight & accept suggestions, redirection, and
- guidance
